Arena students to represent India in international contest in Hong Kong

Assam: Students of the Arena centre in Panbazar, Assam, won Awards at the 6th ADDA Short Film Festival 2009. The event was held on Sunday, 6th December, at Rabindra Bhawan, Guwahati, Assam.

Entries to the Festival were open to all individuals/ groups from the North-East region of India. Of these, 5 entries were nominated under the ‘Talent of the Year’ category. 2 films created by students of Arena Animation were selected for Awards in this category.

Three students - Soumendranath Patra, Birendra Kumar & Chetan Thakur - from Arena Animation’s Chowringhee centre in Kolkata have been selected to represent India in the Asia-Pacific Design Challenge 2009.

The three have been selected for their short film titled ‘Save the World’.

They are the winning team from India & will showcase their skills in the final competition of the Panorama Asia-Pacific Animation Design Challenge 2009. The Design Challenge is sponsored by Autodesk & will be held in Hong Kong from 10th to 15th of December, 2009.

In this Challenge, the Arena students’ work will be pitted against the work of other contestants from Australia, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines & Singapore.

The concept of the Arena team’s film is as follows:

Our world is under threat due to massive nuclear experiments which cause natural calamities & wars among nations. To counter this, we the people should come together to erase all stains (threats) and thus, Save The World.

Apart from showcasing their film at the competition, these Arena students will also take part in the Animation Challenge Bootcamp, which is a 4-day event held at Cyberport, Hong Kong from December 11 to 14, 2009. During this Boot Camp, they will get the opportunity to improve their submitted animation and be mentored & taught by experts from award-winning companies such as Lucasfilm, Rhythm & Hues, Animal Logic and Imagi.

The refined works from each team will be submitted to judges on December 14 & the Grand Prize winners will be announced the next day.

As for travel & stay, Autodesk will be sponsoring airline tickets, food & accommodation for all participants in Hong Kong. What’s more, the winners of the Animation Challenge will also receive trophies & cash prizes ranging from US $500 to US $1200.

Lastly, the winning entries will also be telecast on the Animax channel on 24th December, 2009.
