On 24th January, 2016, Arena Animation concluded the fourth edition of its ground-breaking 'Orbit Live' festival. Organised exclusively for Arena students across India, the 4-day industry-student event was held at a top 5-star resort in Mumbai.
Students attended master classes conducted by international experts who include Max Howard (founder, Max Howard Consulting Group), Tayah Howard (actress & producer), Damian Perea (film producer & director, Animayo International Film Festival), Penny Holton (senior lecturer, Teesside University), Dr. Paul Noble (senior lecturer, Teesside University), Prof. Ulrich Wegenast (managing director, programme, ITFS Festival), Rafael Zabala, (lead modeller, Psyop Productions), and Raul Garcia (CEO, Melon Digital S.L & director - producer, R&R Communications Inc.
Students started their day with breakfast shots with Damian Perea & Prof. Wegenast, and enjoyed watching some of the best animated short films screened at the prestigious Animayo International Film Festival & Stuttgart Festival of Animation Film (ITFS). The screenings were followed by interactive sessions with the industry experts, where students discussed smaller details and nuances that made the showcased films stand out.
Selected students of Arena Animation got the chance to showcase their work to international experts and gain specific feedbacks for their work.
Awards Night is a festive evening to honour the greatest talents and the best works in the industry. For the first time, voice-over talents of India took centre stage at Orbit Live to receive the honorary awards for their contribution to the animation industry. The international student short films received a great round of applause. Among the awardees were professionals from the media & entertainment industry, animation & VFX artists & Arena students. The glamorous Awards Night also witnessed incredible live performances – including flying drum act, fire dance & live bands.
After the day's learning sessions were over, students rocked the dance floor & partied hard. To their amazement, the international experts joined them and danced to the Bollywood beats.

On 11th January, 2015, Arena Animation concluded the third edition of its ground-breaking 'Orbit Live' festival. Organized exclusively for Arena students from all over India, the 4-day industry-student event was held at a top 5-star resort in Mumbai. The location served as a beautiful backdrop for 4 days of live workshops, seminars, discussions with experienced professionals from the animation, VFX, and gaming industries-from around the world.
This year, Orbit Live included a 'Festival of Honour' component, which meant that students got a wonderful opportunity to interact closely with top organizers from international animation festivals, such as Annecy (France), Animex (UK), and PISAF (South Korea). Winners of Arena's Creative Minds events enjoyed a double bonanza, with special, one-on-one sessions organized for them. As part of the exclusive 'Star Lounge' sessions, these lucky students showed their work to the foreign dignitaries, discussed career opportunities in international studios and companies, and received quick tips on improving their demoreel as well as on making a successful career in animation.
For the onlookers, it was great to see students discuss the specific animation techniques, and job and career opportunities so closely with professionals who have had decades of experience in the field.
To start with, on Day One itself, students attended a special screening of the Oscar-winning animated short film 'Mr. Hublot'. Right after, they got an insight into the making of Mr. Hublot, by Thierry Dezarmenien, one of the animators who actually worked on the film!
In addition to these, Orbit Live 2015 also brought in the new concept of 'Breakfast Shorts', where students got to watch the best short animated films and work showcased at Annecy, Animex, and PISAF festivals. Afterward, they had a discussion with the representatives of those festivals, regarding the smaller details and nuances that made the showcased films stand out
Immediately after the Breakfast Shorts, students went in for their respective workshops. At any given time, there were 8 separate workshops being conducted simultaneously, and students learnt directly from industry professionals.
Each workshop was conducted by a prominent industry professional, and the list read like a who's who of the animation industry: from Sabu Jose to Vaibhav More, Prosenjit Ganguly to Prashant Mahanta, Saurabh Saxena, Chetan Sharma, Prashant Shahane, Pradeep Chaudhuri, Atul Bhatkar, Prashant Mukare, Nitin Patel, Darshan Barot, Varun Chawla, Ranjit Singh, Gozoop…phew!
But it was definitely not all work and no play. Every evening, after the day's workshops were over, students let their hair down and partied hard. They mingled with their peers from all over the country, and enjoyed the evening with music, dance, and a big, rocking party!
At sundown on Saturday, January 10, 2015, was held the Orbit Live Awards Night. These Awards shone the spotlight on emerging and established talent from the animation and VFX industry from India and from around the world. Students had their own special categories of awards, while the outstanding work of industry people too was recognized on the same glittering, glamourous occasion.
On the last day of the event, students attended the HR Outlook, a discussion with recruiters where companies shared the mantras that students must follow, in order to find job placements in the creative industry.
With the fabulous success of this year's festival, Arena’s Orbit Live has become a massive, must-attend event on the calendar of every animation student and professional, around the globe.
Orbit Live 2014 gave students the rare opportunity to meet, learn from & interact with two of the top studios in the world - Pixar & DreamWorks. Chris Ford from Pixar Animation Studios, USA, addressed students & introduced them to Pixar RenderMan, a patent technology of the studio that is taught in India only at Arena Animation. Susan Erokan from DreamWorks Studios, USA, provided an insight into the animation pipeline of the studio. Both the speakers were present at the venue to guide & interact with participating students over the four days of the event.
Students got once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work on live projects for Karbonn Mobile & to re-create their favourite Hollywood movie in 60 seconds. Conducted by Talenthouse, these live projects saw students racing against the clock to animate a logo for Karbonn Mobile and to finish editing & re-creating a complete movie within 60 seconds.
All participating students interacted with industry veterans from Pixar and DreamWorks Animation, USA. They also received guidance from industry experts like Vaibhav More (Vaibhav More Films), Vaibhav Kumaresh (Vaibhav Studios), Roto Shah (Sound Designer & Composer), Prashant Mahanta (WOT Production), Ginilal Salunkhe (VFX artist), Vikrant Batra (UCOL, New Zealand), Siddharth Maskeri (Void Films), Mehul Hirani (ARTO Animation), Prosenjit Ganguly (The Forest Floor Studios) & Meghna Singla (Google India).
During the event, students experienced live demonstrations of Pixar RenderMan, Autodesk Maya & Nuke.
Students were engrossed in various exciting & interactive activities during these sessions. From a quick sketching challenge to creating & recording live sounds for an animation film, they remained engaged and captivated by their mentors. The students did not miss a single opportunity to receive valuable inputs from these creative gurus.
While the days were dedicated to learning & projects, evenings saw students let their hair down & party the night away. From making waves in a poolside party to rocking the dance floor during a masquerade party, students made the most of every minute. Not to mention, they were back in the morning, on time, to learn, unlearn & re-learn.
After three days of rigorous training & classes, it was time for the hard work to be recognized. Arena Orbit Awards Night bestowed honours on 14 industry biggies, who shared the stage with 20 students who had excelled in various workshops throughout the event. The open-air Awards Night also witnessed mind-boggling performances by the Skeleton Dance Group and Rhythm Group who kept the audience rocking, cheering and asking for more.
Orbit Live 2014 wrapped up with HR Outlook, a panel discussion on jobs & recruitments. Students spoke with professionals from Star India, Prime Focus, Red Chillies, Prasad Group, and E Plus Technologies to understand the requirements of these companies, when hiring for a job role. They got to understand the exact needs, from resume to show reel to skills, which will help them when they step out to seek a job.
Hosted at the posh Ramada Powai Hotel & Convention Centre, Mumbai, Orbit Live 2013 was an energetic mix of creative students from across the country. Biggies of animation studios mingled with the students during the seminars as well as on the dance floor.
Experts brought out the talents of the individual students with their unique way of training & sessions. Be it for finding original ideas for 10 seconds shots or game designing for mobile applications; students were fully involved & excited about the sessions.
Participating students got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work closely with top national & international industry experts, such as Mike Blum (Pipsqueak Films), Pete Draper (Makuta VFX), Vaibhav More (Vaibhav More Films), Soumin Patel (Comic Artist), Virat Khutal (Twist Mobile), Prashant Shahane (CG &VFX Professional), Yogesh Kaushal (Rhythm & Hues Studio), Sandeep Vasudevan (Zed Cube Media), Vaibhav Kumaresh (Vaibhav Studio), Roto Shah (Sound Designer & Composer), Prosenjit Ganguly (The Forest Floor Studios), Siddharth Maskeri (Void Films), Kirtish Tharthare (Rhythm & Hues Studio) & S. Stalin(VenSat).
Orbit Live 2013 recognized & applauded the best work of students & industry professionals. The audiences were enthralled with the performance of UV dance group of Jhalak Dikhla Ja fame, live glue painting by Vaibhav More & shared experiences of industry biggies.
Fun elements like carnival night, music & dance with Hawaiian beats, rain dance & after dinner parties made sure that students not only had a busy day but exciting evenings as well.
Students got the exclusive opportunity to interact with industry people & studios during HR Outlook. Experts from Krayon Pictures, Prime Focus, StereoD & Sugar Mediaz provided them some tips & tricks used in production, animation, VFX & new media. Some of the students managed to impress the attending experts & were selected for job interviews on the spot.
